2017 - 2018 in Forest School
This academic year we are linking our Forest School sessions with year groups topics.
We hope that through making practical links to the topics pupils are learning during lessons that creativity, imagination and a deeper understanding is shown through their work.
Work completed by pupils will be posted online so please keep checking this page for more information on work we have completed.
Forest School Ethos
At Byron Primary School we see Forest School (FS) as an educational tool that helps to promote and develop pupil’s; personal, social and emotional development and attributes through regular outdoor learning. The whole ethos of FS is to allow children time and a designated suitable learning space to develop skills, interests and understanding through a whole new range of fun, exciting, challenging and interesting activities. These activities maybe hands-on, practical and theory based experiences through learning in the natural, outdoor environment.
Pupils, staff and adults will use tools, learn boundaries and take responsibilities for their learning, developing their skills both physically and socially. This will hopefully show a noticeable change in most pupils, of their; self esteem, motivation, creativity, imagination, respect and a visible increase in confidence.
The leader/teachers role throughout FS is to act as an organiser, a positive role model to the FS scheme of work, with the role to be a hands on practitioner and to observe the learning of pupils during their time spent in the natural learning environment.
FS will encourage all pupils and staff to change their perceptions of the natural environment around us, how it can be used as a tool to learn, but also how important it is to develop the whole child in areas other learning tools do not access. It will encourage and inspire pupils to take an interest in the locality, and to highlight the importance of the natural environment which we have.
A Forest School encourages children to:
- develop personal and social skills ensuring we treat everybody equally; we listen and respect each other’s opinions and values; and always try and help other people

· pursue knowledge that interests them
· learn how to manage failures; knowing that we are all special and treating everybody equally
· build confidence in decision making and evaluating risk; ensuring that we know the difference between right and wrong and help others to achieve this
· develop practical skills; through the use of tools, independent tasks, working together in a team to solve problem and make a range of different practical items
· understand the benefits of a balanced and healthy lifestyle
· explore connections between humans, wildlife and the earth
· regularly experience achievement and success; knowing that we are all special
· reflect on learning and experience; being able to evaluate work completed by others as well as their own
· develop their language and communication skills; listening and respecting everybody’s opinions and values; helping each other and respect those people who help us
· improve physical motor skills; through fine and gross motor skills
· become more motivated
· improve their concentration levels
